The “International Symposium on Thermalism and Quality of Life” emerged in 2015 as an initiative of the Campus Auga of the University of Vigo in collaboration with Expourense-Termatalia, the Ourense City Council and the Ourense Provincial Council, in parallel with the celebration every two years of the International Thermal Tourism Fair (TERMATALIA) in the city of Ourense. The aim of the Symposium was to develop a complementary scientific event to deepen in the knowledge about the nature and value of thermal and mineral-medicinal waters as agents for therapy and for quality of life and well-being, as well as to analyze its social and economic implications closely related to Thermal Tourism, without forgetting other applications of this natural resource in different areas of interest.

In addition, the simultaneous celebration in the same place of this scientific meeting with Termatalia pursues an additional objective of extraordinary importance: to put researchers and professionals in close contact in order to promote collaboration synergies that facilitate the transfer of knowledge and give visibility to the value of scientific research as an engine of development.

Six years later, the Symposium is a consolidated international scientific event in the field of thermalism thanks to the commitment and close collaboration and decision between the different promoter institutions mentioned above, the quality of the papers presented and the participating researchers, and the assistance of public associated with the business field of thermalism participating in the Termatalia fair.

As a result of the symbiosis between the University of Vigo and Expourense and, in order to deepen this hybridization between the academy and the socio-economic sector, in this IV edition the Symposium and the Termatalia Congress converge in a single common program in the that cross-cutting activities alternate with other more specific activities. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, this joint event is also associated with the “Conference on Medical Hydrology”, focused on the role of balneotherapy in recovering health after the pandemic, which will be held in the same venue on Wednesday, September 15th, the date on which the event will be inaugurated.
